(Cleveland) FutureChurch extends its welcome to Bishop Nelson J. Perez as he prepares to serve as the 11th Bishop of the Diocese of Cleveland beginning on September 5, 2017.

Bishop Perez serves as Chair of the U.S Bishops’ Subcommittee for Hispanic Affairs and is a member of the Subcommittee for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development.  Earlier in his ministry he served as Assistant Director of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s Office of Hispanic Catholics and was Founding Director of Philadelphia’s Catholic Institute for Evangelization.

At a gathering of social ministers in January 2016, Bishop Perez spoke about the Church’s preferential option for the poor (Catholic News Service, 1/26/16).  He commented, “. . . proclaiming the Gospel is messy.  And part of learning how to deal with the mess is part of growth.”  Further, he exhorted, “Christ is the face of mercy, but we’re the face of Christ.  Right? So we’re the face of mercy, too.”

“FutureChurch looks forward to engaging in dialogue and collaborating with Bishop Perez on the many issues that face the diocese and the wider church including greater inclusion of women and laity in church governance and ministry, and creating new models of pastoral leadership in a time of fewer priests.’’ said Deborah Rose-Milavec, Executive Director of FutureChurch.  “We know that Catholics throughout the Diocese have expressed hope that Pope Francis would appoint a bishop who shares his pastoral instincts, commitment to social justice, and willingness to engage in dialogue with the People of God.  We believe Bishop Perez will be that kind of pastor.”

“Like any diocese, Cleveland certainly has its challenges. But there are also opportunities to strengthen our Church for this generation and for generations to come,” said Russ Petrus, Program Director for FutureChurch. ”FutureChurch is confident that by working together and embracing the guidance of the Holy Spirit, Bishop Perez and the Catholic community of Cleveland can forge creative solutions to those challenges and seize upon the opportunities that lie ahead.”
