In Memory of Her
Lent, Holy Week, and the Easter season are perfect times to incorporate the stories of biblical women who are often left out. For example, this year’s Palm Sunday account of the Passion from Matthew’s gospel, deletes the story of the woman who anointed Jesus’ head, even though the passage opens with her beautiful and prophetic act. Likewise, the faithful women from Galilee who journeyed with Jesus and courageously stayed at the foot of the cross can also be overlooked even though they are powerful role models for accompanying all who suffer. And worst, on Easter Sunday, the Resurrection account stops just short of Jesus’ commission to Mary of Magdala to “Go and tell my brothers” of his Resurrection.
To retrieve the stories of these women who accompanied and comforted Jesus while the male disciples fled, FutureChurch has developed a special Lenten, Holy Week and Easter resource kit. The kit contains concrete steps to include biblical women in your Lenten services and Holy Week liturgies, including With Him All Along the Way a special prayer service; The Women at the Foot of the Cross, special Stations of the Cross prayer service; and the ground breaking article Women in the Bible and Lectionary by Ruth Fox, OSB. Resources can be adapted for the Easter season as well. Begin planning now for next year!
