Sr. Kate Kuenstler has assisted parishioners from dozens of U. S. parishes with canonical appeals to keep their churches open.  Over the past five years, she succeeded in winning cases at the Congregation for the Clergy and the Apostolic Signatura, both very rare occurrences indeed. Her expertise and advocacy helped catalyze a monumental change in Vatican policy. The Vatican no longer rubber-stamps bishops’ decisions to close and sell vibrant churches. Instead, it has begun a new policy preserving churches as worship sites, making it less likely for bishops to close viable parishes solely because of the priest shortage or because of the value of the property.

Sr. Kate assisted several parishes in Cleveland whose appeals were recently upheld in a landmark decision.  She is the author of in depth canonical advice FutureChurch provided to all appealing Cleveland parishioners in March 2009. In March 2012 Sr. Kate wrote an expert canonical commentary on Vatican decrees upholding Cleveland appeals on both procedural and substantive grounds. Hundreds of parishioners all over the world regularly download Sr. Kate’s canonical information from our FutureChurch website.

Sister Kate is a member of the international congregation; Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ.  She received her doctorate in Canon Law from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome, Italy. She also has a BA in education, and an MA in theology. In the past, Sister Kate has served the church as a former diocesan tribunal lawyer, teacher, parish catechetical director, and diocesan director of religious education. She is a writer for the catechetical program, “Seasons of Faith” and is published in Italy, England, Germany, and the United States. Sr. Kate lives in Rhode Island where she has opened a private practice in canon law. Her focus is working for the rights of laity and their role in the Catholic Church.
