Robert Mickens - Keynote Speaker

LaCroix International Editor and Reporter
FutureChurch welcomes Robert Mickens as our Keynote Speaker for our 2019 Fall Event. Based in Rome, Mickens has been reporting and commenting on the Vatican and the Catholic Church for more than three decades. He is currently the English language editor of LaCroix International and his column, “Letter from Rome” is widely syndicated and read. Mickens will join us on the heels of the Amazonian Synod, which is expected to take up topics such as married priests and women deacons. He will share his unique perspective and insight on Pope Francis’ struggle to overcome clericalism. As part of the event sponsorship packages - we are offering an exclusive collection of “Letters from Rome” – Bob’s frank writings about the developments, tensions, and achievements of Pope Francis.

Get a "Meet and Greet" ticket and enjoy time hearing Bob talk about his investigations and adventures as a vaticanista just before his general presentation that evening.  To read Bob's articles go to LaCroix International.

Marie Collins - Louis J. Trivison Award Recipient

Premier Catholic Leader addressing clergy sex abuse and founder of The Marie Collins Foundation
FutureChurch will present Marie Collins with the Louis J. Trivison Award for 2019. Born in Dublin, Ireland, Marie Collins is a tireless campaigner for the protection of children, for the accountability of the church, and for justice for survivors of sexual abuse, as she herself was a victim of clergy abuse as a 13-year-old. She is a founding trustee of the Marie Collins Foundation and the support group for abuse survivors, One in Four (Ireland), as well as a founding member of the Irish depression support group Aware.

In 2014, she was appointed by Pope Francis as an inaugural member, and one of two survivors, to his newly formed Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors.  But on March 1, 2018, she resigned stating, "The most significant problem has been reluctance of some members of the Vatican Curia to implement the recommendations of the Commission despite their approval by the pope."  Marie noted, "it is devastating in 2017 to see that these men [in the Curia] still can put other concerns before the safety of children and vulnerable adults.  It was "the last straw."  This September 9-22, 2019, FutureChurch and other church reform organizations will sponsor Marie Collins for a 6 Catholic Tipping Point tour.  She will address the role of laity in changing the Church.  Learn more at

Karen Gargamelli-McCreight - Christine Schenk Award for Young Catholic Leaders Recipient

Benincasa Community Co-Founder
FutureChurch will present Karen Gargamelli-McCreight with the Christine Schenk Award for Young Catholic Leaders for 2019. Gargamelli-McCreight is one of the co-founders of the Benincasa Community in New York City.  Benincasa Community is a lay community named for Catherine (Benincasa) di Siena, the peacemaker, mystic, theologian, and reformer. Dedicated to the works of mercy and justice in an era thirsting for humanity's collective recognition of unity and interdependence with all creation, members of Benincasa are grounded by faith, an emerging understanding of the new cosmology, the development of new economic models in our world, and the need for deepening relationships with the land and one another.

Karen has been instrumental in organizing hopeful and joy-filled projects aimed at reforming the Church, including witnessing for justice for immigrants, victim-survivors of clergy sexual abuse and promoting women in the leadership and ministry.  Most recently, she and others helped bring new awareness about the role of Mary Magdalene at their feast day celebration. Learn more at the Benincasa Community
