Faith in the Margins:  For People who Struggle with their Churches

CLEVELAND, OH:

Designed to provide opportunity for open and honest discussion of personal struggles with the Church as institution, Faith in the Margins is a 4 part series for young adults in their 20s and 30s sponsored by the GenNext group of FutureChurch.

The series will be held every Wednesday in October (October 7, 14, 21, and 28) from 7-8:30pm at Visible Voice Books, 1023 Kenilworth Ave. in Tremont.  There is no cost to participate but FutureChurch asks that you RSVP before you come.  You do not have to attend the series every week and can join the group as a latecomer after it starts.

To register or for more information, contact Emily at FutureChurch 216-228-0869 X3 or emily@futurechurch.org.

The purpose of this series is:

1. To have a forum for young adults in their 20s and 30s to openly and honestly discuss their    struggles with Church as an institution.

2. To reflect on and move through the experiences of “marginalization.”

3. To provide a space for prayer about these issues and feelings.

Kathleen Thomas, a member of the planning committee for the series and a member of FutureChurch’s Board of Trustees, looks forward to participating in the series.  Kathleen identifies with the title of the series because she “wants to be part of a community with other Catholics who refuse to allow themselves to be satisfied with the status quo.  Oftentimes, Catholics just ‘pray, pay and obey’ without truly challenging themselves to follow the gospel.  Developing my spirituality through discussions like this and a reform organization like FutureChurch helps me to stay Catholic.”

FutureChurch, headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, is a U.S. coalition of 5,000 parish based Catholics striving to educate fellow Catholics about the seriousness of the priest shortage, the centrality of the Eucharist (the Mass), and the systemic inequality of women in the Catholic Church. FutureChurch makes presentations throughout the country, distributes educational and informational packets and recruits activists who call on Catholic leadership to open ordination to all baptized persons who are called to priestly ministry by God and the people of God.
