FutureChurch Statement in Support of Call To Action Nebraska

FutureChurch calls on Bishop Fabian Bruskewitz of Lincoln, Nebraska to rescind the excommunication of faithful Call To Action Catholics in Lincoln. We ask Bishop Bruskewitz to meet with members of Call To Action Nebraska in a spirit of Gospel healing for peaceful resolution of differences.

We applaud CTA Nebraska for their work to create a more just church and society, especially their advocacy for the inclusion of altar girls and for the protection of children in the wake of the clergy sex abuse crisis.

We note that Bishop Bruskewitz is the only diocesan bishop in the United States who has not complied with the US Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People that serves to protect children in response to the nationwide revelations of sexual abuse.  Likewise, Bishop Bruskewitz is the only bishop in the U.S. who does not allow girls to serve at the altar.

We support CTA Nebraska in their appeal of the decision by the Congregation of the Clergy to uphold Bishop Bruskewitz’s action.  We request that same Congregation to require Bishop Bruskewitz to comply with the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People. We also call on Bishop Bruskewitz to gratefully accept the willingness of girls to serve their church as acolytes.

FutureChurch is a coalition of parish centered Catholics who seek the full participation of all Catholics in the life of the Church. FutureChurch strives to educate fellow Catholics about the seriousness of the priest shortage, the centrality of the Eucharist (the Mass), and the systemic inequality of women in the Catholic Church. It seeks to participate in formulating and expressing the Sensus Fidelium (the Spirit inspired beliefs of the faithful) through open, prayerful and enlightened dialogue with other Catholics locally and globally.
