FutureChurch Protests Ouster of Bishop Gumbleton
In full-page ads running in several Detroit newspapers, FutureChurch joined many Detroit Catholics who publicly questioned the Archdiocese’s removal of Bishop Thomas Gumbleton as pastor of inner city St. Leo parish. At his last Mass, Bishop Gumbleton told parishioners that he was forced out “because of the openness with which I spoke out last January concerning victims of sex abuse in the Church.” Gumbleton was referring to his testimony in support of an Ohio bill that would have created a one-year “look back” period for civil cases by extending the statute of limitations from two years past a victim’s 18th birthday to 20 years. During testimony Gumbleton revealed that a seminary faculty member had abused him as a young man. Cardinal Maida and Bishop Gumbleton have said that he will continue to function as a priest and bishop in Detroit. If you would like to write in support of Bishop Gumbleton visit www.cta-usa.
