Theologians Come to Sobrino’s Defense
While acknowledging that the Vatican did not attempt to silence liberation theologian Jon Sobrino SJ, or stop Catholics from reading his work, European theologians have decried the process that placed him under suspicion. British theologian Nicholas Lash found the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith’s accusations to be “incompetent and possibly malicious misreadings of his [Sobrino’s] theology.” Tina Beattie, writing for several committee members of the Catholic Theological Association of Great Britain wonders, “how the CDF can justify an intervention of this nature, which shows the shortcomings in its theological reasoning and a lack of pastoral sensitivity.”
