Hidden Women of Holy Week and Eastertide

A special Lenten prayer service spotlighting stories of the unheralded women in Jesus’ discipleship was presented at the national Call To Action Conference on November 8 and 9. FutureChurch board member Barbara Litrell and Emily Holtel Hoag of the FutureChurch staff led a creative “Women at the Foot of the Cross” celebration presented from the point of view of Jesus’ women disciples both historical and contemporary.

Each station begins with a reflection from the viewpoint of a woman from scripture (such as the woman caught in adultery, the Canaanite Woman, Joanna etc.). The leader then makes a connection with the experience of women today, ending with a question for contemplation. Participants respond by praying: “We are an Easter people. We know the Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead.” A simultaneous Power Point presentation provides a powerful way to connect Jesus’ passion, the often hidden women of Scripture and suffering women of today.

The service was developed by the Celebrating Women Witness ministry of St. John Vianney parish in Sedona, Arizona of which Barbara is the leader. This parish community uses the service every year on one of the Fridays of Lent as part of their parish’s regular Lenten devotions

Participants at Call to Action were touched. One said, “I can’t remember the last time I was that moved.” They appreciated the integration of more women of the Bible into the traditional stations, the connection to women of today, the enriching voices of the volunteer readers, and the opportunity to share this experience with their communities at home.

“The Women at the Foot of the Cross” is just one part of a new FutureChurch Lent, Holy Week and Easter Season resource. This year’s new packet will include prayer resources and suggestions for how to put “women back in the biblical picture” during the Easter season as well as Lent and Holy Week. It includes the CD for “The Women at the Foot of the Cross.” The packet will be ready February 1. See ad for more details and how to order.
