Discernment and Dialogue, Not Excommunication

Pointing to the practice of the early church where “the function of leadership was to bear witness to the action of God in the community and make decisions based on what the Spirit of God was doing within the people of God,” FutureChurch leaders have called for a moratorium on the use of the penalty of excommunication with regard to women’s ordination.

On December 4. The FutureChurch Board of Trustees approved a statement asking Catholic episcopal leaders “to engage in open, mutual, faith-based dialogue with Fr. Roy Bourgeois and women who experience a call to priestly ordination in the Catholic Church, rather than impose the penalty of excommunication.”

The full statement was sent to the Apostolic Nuncio and media outlets, and is available at www.futurechurch.org.
