“Bill: it is a good deed that you do…Long over due…Prediction: a very high number will mark no or not sure. I hope that my prediction is wrong. Personal regards.”
Thank you for providing the service. You know that many of us “elders” feel like indentured servants. We are supposed to keep our mouths shut and keep going back into the field each day. The culture of this church is marked by oppression and deceit. I have been talking about such a survey for many years now but have allowed fear of recrimination from authorities and peers to keep me silent. THANKS!!!
The problem with the Roman priesthood’s mandatory celibacy is this: we are expected to act like men but treated as boys and dressed up like girls.
Groups like this are divisive and do nothing but cause confusion and division. Don’t you have enough to do other than cause problems for those of us who have embraced celibacy? Please stop the mean spirited attacks!
In my opinion, celibacy is a charism; it need not be imposed on clergy.
I believe celibacy is of great value to the church, and a great gift. But I also think the availability of the Eucharist is an even greater gift.
The discussion is long over due.
What a waist of time!
I believe the question of mandatory celibacy is settled for our own time by the response of the Holy Father. The desires of the world for the spirituality of the church should look toward God more than the desires of men. Whatever the Holy Father says even when it is not infallible is very powerful and a sign of God’s will for the church. We are living in a very difficult time in the church, probably the most difficult times. -Fr. Joe Berger
I do not expect changing the law of celibacy to solve all the problems facing the priesthood today. It would, however, I believe a necessary beginning.
How can our religious leaders prefer that thousand and millions of Catholics (USA) have no Sunday Eucharist than to have them attend a Eucharist celebrated by someone who shared his bed legally with a loving spouse?
Such a discussion is long overdue!!! I would not hesitate to say this publicly with my name attached if opportunity would be so provided. -Fr. Bill Ross
Celibacy is part of and inherent in a priestly life that one (a candidate) freely accepts and enters into.
