Celebrando Mujeres Testigos
Los ensayos de Celebrando Mujeres Testigos son parte del proyecto original “Celebrating Women Witnesses”, que empezó en 2001 con el objetivo de redescubrir a las líderes femeninas en la Iglesia Católica. Esperamos que esta colección de traducciones puedan llevar estas historias a más personas, especialmente a quienes han aportado a la Iglesia su herencia y cultura Latina.
En 1997, FutureChurch empezó una tradición de celebrar la fiesta anual de Sta. María Magdalena, el 22 de julio. Estas celebraciones han sido diseñadas para llevar la imagen de Magdalena como la discípula en la que Jesús confiaba, en lugar de la imagen antigua que la mostraba como prostituta. Estas celebraciones también ofrecieron una oportunidad para que las mujeres tengan roles prominentes en la liturgia. De 23 celebraciones en 1997, ahora hay más de 300 en todas partes del mundo. El deseo y el interés de aprender más sobre las mujeres de fé continua creciendo. Muchas veces, estas mujeres contribuyeron a construir el Pueblo de Dios, pero no fueron entendidas ni valoradas en nuestra cultura o historia.
Como el proyecto que trata sobre María Magdalena, los ensayos en Celebrando Mujeres Testigos son basados en muchas investigaciones de la historia y la Biblia por expertos académicos. La enseñanza tradicional de las mujeres históricas apoya estereotipos que las muestran como pasivas, obedientes, dulces y silenciosas. Ahora, hemos descubierto que la fé de estas mujeres en el Evangelio les dio fuerza para rechazar los valores patriarcales de su tiempo y vivir sus vidas enfrentando de manera radical la cultura establecida en su tiempo.
Estamos orgullosas de presentar este esfuerzo nuevo para promover una nueva vida en la Iglesia que queremos. Esperamos que estas historias puedan empoderar a toda la gente, especialmente a los Latinos, para trabajar por la justicia en la Iglesia, en el mundo, y en sus propias vidas.
Celebrating Women Witnesses
The essays of Celebrando Mujeres Testigos are part of the original Celebrating Women Witnesses project that began in 2001 to rediscover women leaders in the Roman Catholic Church. It is our hope that providing Spanish translations of these essays will make these stories available to more people, especially those whose rich Latino/a cultural heritage has gifted the Church in so many ways.
In 1997, FutureChurch began a special celebration of the July 22nd feast of St. Mary of Magdala. Designed to make available contemporary scholarship that St. Mary of Magdala was not a prostitute but a trusted follower of Jesus, these celebrations also provided a place for women to serve in visible liturgical roles. From these 23 celebrations in 1997, which now number over 300 across the world, the desire and interest has grown to learn about more women of faith who are often misunderstood and undervalued in our culture and our history but have made significant contributions to the People of God.
Like the Mary of Magdala project, the essays in Celebrando Mujeres Testigos are grounded in extensive historical and biblical research by experts in the field. Traditional teaching about women reinforced gender stereotyping portraying them as passive, obedient, sweet and silent. We now discover that belief in the Gospel led them to resist patriarchal values and to live radically counter-cultural lives.
We are proud to present this newest effort to promote renewal of the Church we love. We hope these stories will empower all people, especially those of Latino/a descent, to work for justice in the Church, in the world, and in their own lives.
